True leaders consistently do three things differently during the transition process:
1) Take the long view: Life transitions are usually measured in months - not weeks or days - and the leader begins the process by setting a realistic time horizon that is aligned to the natural gestation period of the change at hand. This first step is critical. By doing so, the "survival self" is at least temporarily neutralized as the internal troops are rallied for the journey that lies ahead!
2) Be in the moment (with help from others): The ability to take the long view is sustained by our ability to be in the moment. As friend, writer, and philosopher Brendan Schallert reveals: the safest place to be is in the moment. It is in this safe harbor that huge amounts of sense-making, truth-telling, reflection and renewal can be exercised daily so that we can weather the storms that characterize any transition from the "known" to the "unknown." No matter how much we dislike our current place - the unknown future cannot compete with the comfort of a world that has hard edges. Leaders also know that a life transition is never done alone - and will invite the necessary - not the burdensome - to join the adventure as participants in the outcome (not advisors on the sidelines).
3) Commit to a new future: Nothing really happens until a commitment is made. We have become artful dodgers at living out our true intentions. We allow life to incrementally emerge - one painful, cautious step at a time. It is our long view and willingness to manage the moments of uncertainty - one day at a time - that ultimately rewards us with a clarity and focus that cannot be restrained. This newfound commitment to a personal transformation cuts through the complexity of life by emphasizing choice, possibility, and values - three key factors that always enhance the quality of human experience. Murray said it best:
The moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help that would never otherwise have occurred. A stream of events issues from the decision, raising unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamt would have come his way. - W.H. Murray
